Programme overview: 

During the 2nd cycle studies in Geology you will gain broad knowledge in the field of basic Earth sciences. The duration of studies is 4 semesters, ending with the MSc degree.  Following this, you can continue education during four-year doctoral studies in one of the following two doctoral schools: Doctoral School at the University of Silesia in Katowice and International Environmental Doctoral School associated with the Centre for Polar Studies.

  • why it is worth to study stratigraphy and paleontology, as well as how fascinating discovering facts from the past of the Earth can be,
  • that deepened knowledge in the field of mineralogy, petrology and geochemistry can be useful in solving contemporary environmental problems,
  • what the advanced applications of computer techniques in Earth sciences are,
  • what basics in the field of applied geology are indispensable for a modern geologist.

You will know how to...

  • solve theoretical problems and practical geological tasks in the field of prospecting and deposit geology, as well as protection and valuation of land for communes, institutions and private investors; design geological work for the purpose of geological prospecting and geological mapping, use and visualise geological data, as well as interpret satellite and aerial photos,
  • apply in practice the acquired methods for the production of glass, monocrystals, semi-conductors, ceramics and refractories; use modern instrumental methods for examination of minerals, rocks and other products,
  • analyse pollution of atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere, use monitoring methods relevant for sphere to design corrective and remedial actions in the environment,
  • recreate the chronology of geological events on Earth, study the age of rocks; apply in practice the methods for analysing fossils; reconstruct paleoenvironments and paleoecological conditions; recognise the taxonomy of selected fossil fauna groups,
  • work with state-of-the-art equipment, software for interpretation and databases used in geology,
  • take decisions related to the management of water resources, minerals and energy, including energy from renewable sources,
  • work in international research teams thanks to knowledge of foreign language and social competencies.

  • institutions specialised in financing, administering and managing geological activities, mining activities, environmental protection, water management, energetics (WFOŚiGW, PGW - Polskie Wody, as well as in district, provincial and mining authorities),
  • municipal services (water supply, waste management, sewage treatment), laboratories,
  • companies related to environmental protection (preparing EIA reports, designing solutions and devices for supporting environmental protection, law offices),
  • mining industry (deep and open cast mines of energy resources, metal ores, rock and chemical raw materials); energy, chemical and steel industry, construction (especially road and hydro-engineering, exploration companies in Poland and around the world. They are willing to share their knowledge and experience with their young fellow students, because the joint experience of studying in “Żyleta” (the tallest academic building in Poland) connects people, not only professionally.

Admissions criteria

Persons holding an undergraduate, graduate or engineer’s degree diploma  studies in the scope of geology or the related disciplines may apply to be admitted to studies.

In case of candidates in other programmes (related disciplines), the decision regarding admitting to the recruitment procedure will be undertaken by the recruitment committee on the basis of an analysis of obtained learning effects and the curriculum of completed studies.

Recruitment is held on the basis of the assessment of the required documents submitted by the candidate (upon prior registration in the Online Application System).

If the number of candidates exceeds the limit of vacancies, the order of acceptance will be determined by the place on the ranking list created on the basis of the average of grades from studies.

The candidate is obliged to submit the relevant Medical certificate regarding lack of health counterindications for the commencement of studies in the given programme.
