Sociology B.A programme is focused on general sociological knowledge of contemporary society. The Sociology curriculum covers, among other things, the following courses: introduction to sociology, introduction to psychology, elements of philosophy, social demography, social psychology, statistical methods in sociology, introduction to jurisprudence, social policy, sociology of development, sociological research methods, the elements of economics, contemporary Polish society, societal macro- and microstructures, cultural anthropology, English, and IT classes. Undergraduate students take part in obligatory fieldwork.

The aim of the programme is to provide students with knowledge, skills and competencies, which are indispensable to understand and make diagnosis of social phenomena, processes and problems. Sociology graduates are also able to use basic sociological theories and categories to interpret and explain social changes. They can accumulate their knowledge and improve their scientific skills. Graduates are able to use their theoretical knowledge in practice, in projecting and carrying out surveys, leading social campaigns or in human resources management. Sociological knowledge is supplemented with elements of philosophy, logic, ethics, and psychology. Such an interdisciplinary perspective can be used to solve problems that can appear in future professional life. Students are also prepared to participate in social changes on local, regional and supra-regional level, as their attitudes towards society are pro-social. Furthermore, each graduate acquires some specific skills and knowledge connected with one of the following specializations: Urban and Region Sociology, Sociology of Advertising and Social Communication, Knowledge of Contemporary Society, Sociology of Organization and Management.

Urban and Region Sociology

The aim of Urban and Region Sociology specialization programme is to provide students with knowledge, competences and practical skills in the field of sociology of local communities. They gain profound knowledge about specificity of urban social structures and local government institutions. Students are able to analyze and make diagnosis of processes that take place in local and regional communities. Furthermore, the graduates are supposed to know how to carry out sociological research on local communities, and how to make use of the results of their research in solving social problems.

Holders of a degree in Urban and Region Sociology are prepared to work in institutions of public administrations, local government institutions, cultural institutions, non-governmental organizations, and public opinion research agencies. They can also work as specialists and advisers, creating local and regional development strategies or social projects.

Sociology of Organization and Management

The aim of Sociology of Organization and Management specialization programme is to   provide students with knowledge, competence and practical skills in order to develop their ability to explain and understand economic phenomena and processes in organizations as well as determinants of management of organizations. Students obtain theoretical knowledge of relations between society and economy in macro scale and knowledge of social relations between main actors in economic sphere, including knowledge of internal relations within organizations. They are able to indicate social and psychological determinants of the aforementioned actors in various situations, in mainly, in terms of structural change. Graduates have the knowledge of labour market mechanisms and processes too. They are able to create and use research procedures in order to diagnose and evaluate needs of workers employed in enterprises functioning in market economy conditions.

Holders of a degree in Sociology of Organization and Management are prepared to work in small, medium and large-sized companies as specialists, managers in Human Resources departments, recruitment and selection specialists, PR and marketing specialists; in consulting firms as career advisors; in welfare sector institutions connected with labour market; in public opinion research centres and non-governmental organizations.

Sociology of Advertising and Social Communication

The interdisciplinary Sociology of Advertising and Social Communication specialization programme is related to such disciplines as knowledge of communication, marketing and psychology. The programme is focused on the processes of understanding and interpreting social communication in various dimensions, i.e. interpersonal communication, communication in organization, political communication and communication in the media. Students should acquire skills and knowledge of how the contemporary media work, of developing and creating professional media release, analysis of media discourse, and preparing, as well as carrying out public opinion research, and an examining the effectiveness of advertising; moreover, they have a good understanding of contemporary social issues.

Holders of a degree in the Sociology of Advertising and Social Communication have skills necessary to prepare a media plan and promotional and advertising campaign; can successfully function in the world of the media, prepare professional media release and analyse media discourse; are able to use contemporary media resources, prepare and carry out public opinion research, or research on the effectiveness of advertising; and are well-versed in contemporary social issues. Graduates of the Sociology of Advertising and Social Communication find employment in state and local government institutions and agencies (media relations departments, town/city promotion departments), advertising and public relations agencies, public opinion research centres, radio and TV stations, and the press.

Knowledge of Contemporary Society

The aim of Knowledge of Contemporary Society specialization programme is to provide students with the knowledge, competencies and practical skills in sub-fields of sociology, such as macro- and microsociology, political sociology, sociology of social problems, sociology of culture, sociology of family, methodology and social research methods, as well as in philosophy and social psychology. The programme is related to such disciplines as social politics, demography, economy, law and anthropology. Graduates have theoretical knowledge of social processes and phenomena, they are also able to analyze them, and to make sociological diagnosis. They are able to use adequate research methods in a proper way used to identify scale and to describe specificity of concrete sociological problems.

Holders of a degree in Knowledge of Contemporary Society are prepared to work in institutions of public administration, governmental institutions, cultural institutions, national and international non-governmental organizations, public opinion research centres, social policy institutions.
