Description

Programme overview: During the 2nd cycle studies in Applied Geology you will gain advanced knowledge in the field of practical applications of geology. The duration of studies is 3 semesters, ending with the MSc Eng. degree.  You can choose one of the following five majors:

  1. Environmental Geochemistry and Mineralogy (GiMŚ)
  2. Geophysics (GF)
  3. Prospecting Geology (GP)
  4. Mineral Resources Management (GZSM)
  5. Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology (HiGI)

The above majors are launched in a specific academic year if at least five students are recruited. After completing these studies, you can continue education during four-year doctoral studies in one of the following two doctoral schools: Doctoral School at the University of Silesia in Katowice and International Environmental Doctoral School associated with the Centre for Polar Studies. The programme allows students to gain advanced knowledge in the field of applied Earth sciences.

  • Silesian Water Centre which deals with water in a complex manner, from the hydrobiological, hydrological, hydrogeological and other perspectives,
  • International Centre for Polar Studies which enables research in the polar regions,
  • possibility to participate in student exchange programmes: Erasmus, Most, CEEPUS,
  • „Graduate of geology at the University of Silesia” is a renowned brand.

  • what basics of general geology are indispensable for a geology engineer,
  • what the advanced applications of computer techniques in Earth sciences are,
  • what basic entrepreneurship is and how to navigate in the labour market for geologists,
  • how to prepare environmental impact reports,
  • what geomaterials are, how we study and use them,
  • what the advanced techniques of research on air pollution are and what we actually breathe,
  • the applications of geophysics in geology (and more),
  • what natural risks are, how to study and and prevent them,
  • what methods of prospecting geology are and how a modern Earth treasure hunter works,
  • how to develop computer geological models and what possibilities to create forecasts and take decisions they provide,
  • how to administer mineral raw materials, use and dispose of waste,
  • how to protect and use water resources,
  • how geology is applied in construction, hydraulic engineering and geotechnics,
  • other interesting things in selected elective courses.

You will know how to...

  • solve theoretical problems and practical geological tasks in the field of the selected major,
  • use in practice the acquired research methods applied in geology and geophysics,
  • analyse pollution of atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere, use monitoring methods relevant for sphere to design corrective and remedial actions in the environment,
  • take decisions related to the management of water resources, minerals and energy, including energy from renewable sources,
  • work with state-of-the-art equipment, software for interpretation and databases used in geology, visualise the gathered knowledge in the form of maps (created in the GIS environment), computer models,
  • thanks to knowledge of foreign language and social competencies – work in international research teams.

  • mining industry (deep and open cast mines of energy resources, metal ores, rock and chemical raw materials); energy, chemical and steel industry, construction (especially road and hydro-engineering, exploration companies in Poland and around the world,
  • institutions specialised in financing, administering and managing geological activities, mining activities, environmental protection, water management, energetics (WFOŚiGW, PGW - Polskie Wody, as well as in district, provincial and mining authorities),
  • geological authorities in Poland and around the world (Great Britain, Australia, Denmark, Belgium),
  • municipal services (water supply, waste management, sewage treatment), laboratories,
  • companies related to environmental protection (preparing EIA reports, designing solutions and devices for supporting environmental protection, law offices),
  • universities and research institutions in Poland and around the world, consulting and expert companies, and they are willing to share their knowledge and experience with their young fellow students, because the joint experience of studying in “Żyleta” (the tallest academic building in Poland) connects people, not only professionally.

Admissions criteria

Persons holding a graduate or engineer’s degree diploma studies in the scope of geology or the related disciplines may apply to be admitted to studies.

In case of candidates in other programmes (related disciplines) the decision regarding admitting to the recruitment procedure will be undertaken by the recruitment committee on the basis of an analysis of obtained learning effects and the curriculum of completed studies.

Recruitment is held on the basis of the assessment of the required documents submitted by the candidate (upon prior registration in the Online Application System).

If the number of candidates exceeds the limit of vacancies, the order of acceptance will be determined by the place on the ranking list created on the basis of the average of grades from studies.

The candidate is obliged to submit the relevant Medical certificate regarding lack of health counterindications for the commencement of studies in the given programme.
