The aim of the International Environmental Doctoral School associated with the Centre for Polar Studies at the University of Silesia in Katowice (IEDS) is to provide a new generation of scientists with new opportunities for high-quality contributions to scientific research by offering them theoretical and practical (methodological) training, designed to stimulate their intellectual growth and boost their academic status. These aims are in line with the general strategy of the University of Silesia in Katowice and the Institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
The University of Silesia in Katowice and the Institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences aim to achieve the highest standards of education and scientific research, assessed with the use of parameterised assessment methods. The International Environmental Doctoral School is likely to significantly help the cause through educating young academic staff and conducting research in collaboration with renowned academic centres from abroad. Useful in working towards the goal will also be the experience gained as a result of the previous activity of the Centre for Polar Studies and Interdisciplinary Polar Studies KNOW.
The International Environmental Doctoral School (IEDS) will involve cooperation with foreign academic centres, whose academic staff will work as supervisors or auxiliary supervisors and lecturers at IEDS, and which will accept IEDS doctoral students for internship programmes. Such cooperation will make it possible to ensure very high standards of education, which is a priority for the University of Silesia in Katowice and for the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Requirements to enter qualification procedure
Admission to the International Environmental Doctoral School (IEDS) associated with the Centre for Polar Studies at the University of Silesia in Katowice is in accordance with Resolution No. 76 of the Senate of the University of Silesia in Katowice passed on 26 January 2021 concerning admission requirements and mode of recruitment.

Requirements to admission
The call is open to all those who are not PhD holders and are not students at the doctoral schools. The call shall be held by a committee appointed by the head of the host institution for the project acting as the applicant, comprising the principal investigator as the chair and at least two persons appointed thereby with appropriate academic or professional qualifications. The committee shall evaluate the candidates by awarding them points for their competencies to perform specific tasks in a research project and scientific achievements to date. On the basis thereof, the committee shall rank the candidates according to the following criteria:
publication track record, including publications in renowned scientific papers/ magazines (30% of the final score):
Conditions for admission to the qualification procedure
registering an account in the www.irk.us.edu.pl system and filling in a form containing appropriate declarations and consents;
submission in the system www.irk.us.edu.pl:
– a copy of the graduation diploma with a supplement;
– curriculum vitae;
– title and outline of a doctoral project,
– the form of scientific achievements and the documents certifying them, as well as other documents specified in the eligibility criteria for specific topics (admissible submission at the office of the IEDS, via polarknow@us or the IEDS website.

paying the enrollment fee in the amount of PLN 190.
