Characteristics of the study:
During the MSc studies, completed with the defense of the master dissertation, students deepen their knowledge and skills in biological science and, under the supervisor’ direction, perform, by themselves, the researches in general and experimental biology or ecology and environmental protection. Proposed forms of teaching include lectures, seminars, bachelor, specialization and MSc practical trainings, laboratory classes, listening classes as well as field classes.
The workshops and Master’s projects are conducted in the modern, well-equipped laboratories or in the field, while the seminars provide essential theoretical support on how to plan research experiments and how to prepare, discuss and present Master’s thesis. Besides, the curriculum of this degree scheme contains courses from the following disciplines that are common and obligatory for all students, i.e. plant and animal phylogenetics and taxonomy, selected aspects of the ecology, mechanisms of evolution and bioethics. The important component of the curriculum is also to familiarise a student with modern information technology as well as with the application of statistical tools in life sciences. Apart from the obligatory courses, which compose a main scaffold of the curriculum, numerous facultative courses are offered, enabling individual profiling of the educational path of the students according to their interests and preferences and in connection with the chosen specialisation. This offer is additionally supplemented by a plethora of courses from related fields of study, such as biotechnology and environmental protection.
General and Experimental Biology
The graduate of this specialisation obtains a solid and up to date knowledge on the general and experimental biology and related biological disciplines. Practical, specialised skills of the alumnus, supported by the essential theoretical knowledge are linked to the use of advanced equipment of the biology laboratories as well as both basic and advanced techniques used in biological material analyses.
Ecology and Nature Conservation
The graduate of this specialisation obtains a solid and up to date knowledge on the ecology and nature conservation and related biological disciplines. The knowledge possessed during the study enable to identify threatened species and habitats and invasive alien species and evaluate the biological diversity.
The program of specialization beside an obligatory module on biological diversity protection, offers numerous and versatile facultative courses which provide a students with the advanced knowledge on various aspects of ecology and nature conservation including between others adaptation of organisms to the environment, bioindicators and biomarkers of environmental stress, soil biology, biological methods for assessment of the environment quality, dendrology, environmental and ecological education, social ecology, phytosociology, ecosystem creation and restoration.
Evaluation of Natural Resources
The graduate has a broad and systematic knowledge of general biology and demonstrates in-depth knowledge and skills regarding the wide-ranging problems concerned with the evaluation of natural resources and biodiversity protection. The graduate is able to correctly identify and describe different natural environments, with particular consideration of elements listed in all national and European legislation, and in other publications related to the protection of biodiversity. The graduate can use molecular research techniques for developing effective conservation projects regarding the genetic resources of plants and animals. The graduate has the practical skills necessary to plan and carry out an inventory and evaluation of natural resources and to analyse the results with a critical approach. A graduate of this speciality has the theoretical and practical background to use modern statistical tools and information systems for the acquisition, collecting, processing and visualization of geographic data (GIS). Thus, a graduate of this speciality is prepared to carry out scientific research using computer modelling and to prepare professional reports which have a practical use. In addition, the graduate is aware of the need to document the current state of the natural environment. He/she has acquired the knowledge and skills necessary in the design of databases, storage and management of environmental data, following all relevant legal regulations in this area.
Graduates can be employed in scientific institutions and production plants, analytical, control and diagnostic laboratories, museum natural departments, health care institutions, pharmaceutical and food industry, in plant growing and animal husbandry, in the environmental protection and economy institutions and agencies, in the custom offices (due to the convention about international market of wild animals and plants), in the offices of environmental protection of local governments, in the advisory centers for EU funds application, in the consulting firms, non-governmental organizations or in the educational institutions and ecological education centers.
Additional important information for candidates:
Study program, according to the assumptions of National Qualification Framework, is realized in the ECTS system which enables students to take part in international Exchange, study abroad and, as the result, look for a job abroad. Students can acquire the authorization for becoming teachers within the frames of educational programme offered additionally.
The candidates with a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Engineer’s degree diploma in the field of biology, biotechnology, environmental protection or related disciplines may apply for admission. In the case of candidates from other degree diplomas (related disciplines), the decisions on qualification to admission process is taken by the admission committee based on the analysis of obtained learning outcomes and curriculum of completed studies.
Admission is based on the assessment of required documents submitted by the candidate (upon prior registration in Online Application System).
In the case when the number of candidates exceeds the limit of places, admission is decided by means of the ranking list, created on the basis of the average study grade. In the case of candidates with the same final diploma grade, the following admission criteria are further applied respectively: average study grade, and then diploma thesis grade.
A study candidate is obliged to submit a relevant medical certificate confirming the lack of medical contraindications to take up studies in this degree programme.
