Description

Offered majors: Foreign Language for Business Purposes

Classes offered: German, French

Frequency of sessions/classes for part-time students and days of the week when classes are held:  sessions are held on Saturdays and Sundays, 9-10 classes

Characteristics of the programme:

The graduates of the 2nd cycle studies in Foreign Language for Business Purposes major have a thorough and in-depth education in general humanities and specialised education in linguistics and Translation Studies. They have a fluent command of English; they are familiar with the varieties of English language, including specialist vocabulary, especially those related to business in its broadest sense. In the course of study, the students get acquainted with current socio-economic problems, international financial markets and learn to draft commercial documents. The students are introduced to issues of Translation Studies by attending classes in written translation as well as simultaneous and consecutive interpreting.

Professional prospects (graduate profile):

  • The profession of the translator (including translation of specialised and artistic texts) work in translation agencies;
  • Work in mass media (radio, TV, press, the Internet);
  • Work in tourism and the service sector, in foreign cooperation departments;
  • Work in editorial offices of magazines and cultural institutions, especially those requiring advanced knowledge of English;
  • Management and marketing activities supported by fluency in foreign languages;
  • Languages (e.g. advertising, public relations).

The graduates have comprehensive knowledge and skills in practical English and a second foreign language: German or French. The Philology Studies prepare the graduates to work as translators and allow them to apply for certification as sworn translators. Thanks to the habits of mind and action developed in the course of study, the graduates of translation and business studies can communicate in a variety of professional environments and flexibly adapt to the requirements of the labour market in fields requiring fluency in English.

Admissions criteria

The following candidates may apply for admission:

  • candidates who obtained the Bachelor’s degree diploma in English Studies or other language studies with a major in English, as well as
  • candidates who completed 1st cycle studies, 2nd cycle studies, or long-cycle studies, and have one of the following documents confirming their level of knowledge of English language:
  • Academic certificate issued by the University of Silesia, confirming the knowledge of English language at the B2 level according to CEFR (upper intermediate) (with a minimum grade of 5) or at the C1 level according to CEFR (advanced) (with a minimum grade of 4),
  • British Council IELTS certificate (with a minimum total score of 6.0),
  • TOEFL iBT certificate (with a minimum total score of 79),
  • TOEFL BPT certificate (with a minimum total score of 570),
  • Cambridge CAE certificate (at the minimum C level),
  • Cambridge CPE certificate (at the minimum C level),
  • PTE Academic certificate (with a minimum total score of 52),
  • Cambridge FCE certificate (at the minimum A level),
  • Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language certificate (at the minimum C level),
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma (minimum grade in the exam in English selected as Language A or B - 5).

For foreign candidates:

The knowledge of Polish at C1 level according to CEFR (advanced) is required.

Admission process:

Admission is competitive and based on diploma grades.

An additional admission criterion, in the situation when many candidates obtained the same grade on the diploma, and the limit of places does not allow for admission of all candidates, will be the average study grade.

Candidates qualified for admission to studies, together with the required documents, shall submit a certificate confirming the average study grade, issued by the authorities of the university where the candidate completed their studies.

Launching particular student groups as part of the above-mentioned major at English Studies depends on the required number of applications depending on the relevant provisions.
