Characteristics of the programme:
Within the framework of Polish–English–Chinese Translation and Interpreting, apart from practical Chinese learning, there are classes in Chinese translation, culture of the East, Chinese linguistics with elements of general linguistics. The graduates have knowledge within the selected major under the degree programme. Therefore, they are competent in communication and translation in Chinese.
Career prospects (graduate profile):
- translator profession (also in specialist and artistic translation), work in translation agencies;
- work in mass media (radio, TV, press, the Internet);
- work in tourism and service sector, in the International Relations Departments;
- work in editorial offices and cultural institutions, especially those requiring advanced knowledge of English.
As one of few universities, the University of Silesia offers the Polish–English–Chinese Translation and Interpreting major within English Philology. The graduates of this major are needed and appreciated specialist translators on the labour market. The level of preparation of the graduates of English Philology: Polish–English–Chinese Translation and Interpreting is high. Moreover, the graduates are familiar with the literature, culture and history of the English, as well as Chinese speaking countries, and they receive general linguistic education. They are qualified linguists and specialists in the practical knowledge of English and the second language – Chinese, the literature and cultural issues of both linguistic areas. They are highly qualified in translation and interpretation (conference) of their degree programme language and the language of the major – Chinese. They are also qualified as philologists, which allows them to gain additional professional qualifications.
The graduates are prepared to use their knowledge and language skills in professional situations involving work in translation agencies, mass media (radio, TV, press, the Internet), tourism and service sector, the International Relations Departments, and cultural institutions.
For candidates with NEW MATURA EXAM:
Competitive admission based on diploma grades, which takes into account the result in the written part of Matura exam in English (as a modern foreign language), converted to ranking points.
The rules of converting the results of Matura exam expressed in percent to ranking points:
In the case when the secondary school-leaving certificate contains the exam results at different levels, and when the candidate improved the Matura exam result, the result which gives the higher number of points after conversion (more favourable for the candidate) is taken into account.
For candidates with OLD MATURA EXAM:
Competitive admission based on diploma grades, which takes into account the result in the written or oral part of Matura exam in English. In the case when the secondary school-leaving certificate contains the exam results in the written and oral part, the result which gives the higher number of points after conversion (more favourable for the candidate) is taken into account.

The percentage result achieved by the candidate will be converted to ranking points according to the following rules:
The candidate who obtained the European Baccalaureate diploma, issued by European Schools in accordance to the Luxemburg Convention of 21 June 1994 about the European School status, are subject to the same admission rules as holders of “new” Polish maturity exam. The results on the diploma of European Baccalaureate are treated as results of the extended “new” Polish maturity exams and are calculated according to the following indicators:

In case the candidate does not submit the European Baccalaureate diploma, for the sake of qualification, the candidate is obliged to submit the certificate about the EB result issued by the appropriate institution and present the EB diploma immediately after its reception.
NOTE: If the admissions criteria for the programme assume additional entrance exams for the holders of “new” Polish maturity exams, the following factors are concerned during the qualification: result from EB diploma calculated according to the scale above and the results of the additional entrance exam.
For the candidates — Polish citizens who graduated from high school abroad or foreigners — the possibility to conduct an exam in English is allowed in the situation when a candidate has a secondary school-leaving certificate which does not include English language as a subject. A written exam will correspond in level to Matura exam in English at the advanced level. The exam results expressed in percent, on a scale of 30% - 100%, will be converted to ranking points in accordance with the same rules as for candidates with the new Matura exam.
The knowledge of Polish at C1 level according to CEFR (advanced) is required.
