Language of instruction
Profil kształcenia: ogólnoakademicki
Offered majors: Culture-Media-Translation
Characteristics of majors:
2nd cycle studies in Culture-Media-Translation offer extended studies in the literature and culture of the countries of the English language area, as well as issues related to translation, media and communication in the broadest sense. The studies conclude with a Master's degree. Apart from the subjects traditionally included in the English Philology major at Master's level, such as advanced forms of writing in English or reading comprehension and analysis, the curriculum also includes specialist subjects in cultural studies, media studies and Translation Studies. The graduates have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the language, literature and culture of the countries of the English language area, as well as an awareness of their complexity. They can independently apply a variety of methods of processing information in their possession within the disciplines relevant to English Philology: critical analysis, evaluation, selection, integration. They will be able to make a creative analysis of scientific publications, compare ideas and standpoints, choose the methods to work out particular issues and present their results within the scope determined by the specificity of the disciplines which are part of English Philology; they will be able to prepare various forms of written works, projects, presentations and oral statements in English on linguistic, literary, and cultural topics on a general and specialist level.
Professional prospects (graduate profile):
The graduates of the major in Culture-Media-Translation are thoroughly educated English-language professionals, whose professional competencies combine practical language skills at the highest level with theoretical knowledge of cultural, literary, and (to a lesser extent) linguistic issues. An important advantage of the major is the fact that apart from the strictly philological field, the studies are an excellent predisposition for work in the media, advertising, public relations, administration and similar areas of business and cultural and social life, where not so much a narrow professional education as a broad understanding of cultural and social mechanisms is particularly valued. In addition to the transfer of factual knowledge, the major also aims to develop a humanistic view of reality in the graduates, which is a rare asset on the job market and is particularly valued by employers in the Western cultural sphere. The major in Culture-Media-Translation has the particular advantage of giving students the opportunity to acquire theoretical knowledge and practical competencies in Translation Studies and the functioning of media (based on the theory of communication as a socio-cultural phenomenon), which directly translates into the attractiveness of employment for the graduates in various institutions where such competencies are required.
