Offered major: Intercultural Studies with Swedish or German

Characteristics of the programme:

The major is addressed mainly to the graduates of the 1st cycle studies in Germanic or Swedish Language Studies. The curriculum provides expanding of knowledge on theory of culture and media studies; it introduces the student to Polish-German/Polish-Swedish relations and to the social and political life of the German speaking/Scandinavian countries. Working on different types of texts makes the graduates confident in editing and interpreting them. One of the important modules of education is familiarisation with regional culture, national minorities or ethnic groups. Fluency in German/Swedish language and culture makes the graduates of this major well qualified to work as a translator, in cultural and educational institutions (cooperative institutions, foundations, institutes), in publishing companies, editorial offices, the mass media, tourism and the service sector in which an extensive knowledge of the German/Swedish language and culture is required.

Admissions criteria

Candidate applying for admission has knowledge, skills, and social competencies necessary to take up education at 2nd cycle studies in this degree programme.

The candidates who obtained the Bachelor’s degree diploma in German studies, Swedish studies, applied linguistics or other degree programmes in humanities, upon conducting a separate admission procedure in the form of an interview, may apply for admission to studies.

Knowledge of German or Swedish language is required.

The graduates of 1st cycle studies at the University of Silesia will be admitted in the first place.

If the expected limit of places has not been filled after admitting all graduates of the University of Silesia, the candidates who completed the 1st cycle studies at other universities will be admitted.

Candidates from other universities will be subject to competitive admission based on Bachelor’s degree diploma grades. In the case of candidates who obtained the same grade on the Bachelor’s degree diploma, and whose admission to studies would result in exceeding the limit of places, the evaluation of interview about the interests related to the subject of MA thesis (history of German literature, culture of German-speaking countries) will be taken into account.

If the qualified candidates fail to enrol within the specified period of time and release places at 2nd cycle studies, graduates of the University of Silesia shall have the priority in filling the gaps.
