Characteristics of the degree programme:
A characteristic feature of Russian Philology is the combination of thorough theoretical knowledge and its practical application. During the studies, the student not only acquires knowledge and skills regarding Russian, the chosen Western modern language, and Russian literature and culture, but also develops competencies of an efficient translator and author, studying effective solutions to non-standard cases, which require an interdisciplinary approach to the issue. The basis of the curriculum for the Russian Philology are classes concerning the theoretical and practical knowledge of the language (written language, conversation, descriptive and practical grammar, comprehension), linguistic and literary classes, as well as a whole spectrum of modules, within which the student learns about cultural and socio-politico-economic realities of Russia. Beside such classes, the curriculum covers subjects regarding copyright, cultural communication, information technology, and a whole segment of major subjects, according to the profile of the chosen major.
Business Russian at Russian Philology is a modern attempt to combine the practical need to educate people fluent in Russian and well-versed in the mechanisms of economy with academic education. The basis of the study is intensive business-oriented Russian learning. The student may study a second language: English or Czech. The offered modules include subjects such as business correspondence, Russian for business purposes, specialist translation, advertising and media language during which the students acquire practical language skills and knowledge regarding current socio-politico-economic issues of Russia and also develop translation skills. The graduates are fluent in Russian and speak English/Czech well. The specialist subjects are complemented by modules preparing the student for MA thesis writing and research work (subjects related to research concerning linguistics and literary studies expanding the student’s general humanistic knowledge).
Professional prospects (graduate profile):
Russian Philology graduates have acquired full qualifications (a diploma certifying obtaining a Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree) and in-depth general knowledge in the field of humanities, concerning language, literature, history, culture, as well as detailed knowledge related to the studied linguistic area. In addition to the elements of social sciences, especially concerning copyright, it gives professional, personal, and social competencies, which constitute a thorough preparation for independent work requiring the knowledge of Russian, as well as English/German (at least on B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), the culture, public space, and Polish-Russian relations.

Business Russian graduates are fluent in written and spoken Russian. They have advanced knowledge and skills which enable them to work with various translational tasks in Russian. They know various types and techniques of translation, can use technical means and new technologies regarding translation properly, and the competencies they have acquired during the studies can be used in educational institutions (after obtaining appropriate pedagogical qualifications) and as a translator. Candidate applying for admission has knowledge, skills, and social competencies necessary to take up education at 2nd cycle studies in this degree programme and major, and in particular
For candidates who obtained a Bachelor’s degree diploma in language studies with a major in translation and interpreting, business Russian, applied Russian and English, Russian studies, Russian language, as well as in Russian studies with a major in translation and interpreting, business Russian, applied Russian and English, Russian studies, Russian language, admission to studies is free, i.e. based on submitting the required documents, including the Bachelor’s degree diploma.
The candidates who obtained a Bachelor’s degree diploma in other degree programmes in the field of humanities will be qualified based on the verification of a document confirming intermediate knowledge of Russian or exam checking the language competencies.
If the number of candidates is higher than the limit of places, the graduates of the following 1st cycle studies at the University of Silesia will be admitted in the first place: language studies with a major in translation and interpreting, business Russian, applied Russian and English, Russian studies, Russian language, as well as Russian studies with a major in translation and interpreting, business Russian, applied Russian and English.
The candidates who completed other 1st cycle studies in the field of humanities will be admitted to the remaining places (until the limit of places has been filled). In this case, admission will be based on the grade average of: final result on the Bachelor’s degree diploma - 50% and grade on the presented document confirming the intermediate knowledge of Russian, or result of the language competency exam in Russian - 50%.
