Characteristics of the degree programme:

Media Cultures is an interdisciplinary field of study focused on multimedia studies, contemporary communication processes and new competences related to digital media and the so-called culture of participation. The course combines elements of social, political and cultural history, the theory of culture, media and communication, as well as visual arts and cultural practice in the field of new media and communication through them and the knowledge of the close relations of this issue with technology, traditional arts and forms of communication, anthropology of culture, aesthetics, the art of the word and mass spectacles. The study program presents issues related to various generations of media and related different cultures, which is matched by a wide range of specialties. The studies allow you to understand the changes in culture under the influence of new technologies, show trends in the development of media genres and media communication, provide the basis for working in the media and the creative industry.

In the second-cycle studies we offer 5 specializations:

Cultural Performances. Students of this specialization acquire knowledge of traditional performing arts (drama, plastic theatre, musical genres, stage forms), contemporary artistic performances, performative practices in public life (politics, sports, religious ceremonies, entertainment events and other forms of social activity), relations between shows and electronic media (television theatre, theatre on the Internet, video art, installations). The student learns the institutional contexts of the functioning of performance practices.

Graduate: The specialization prepares you to work as an organizer of mass events, creator of shows, culture animator, advisor and consultant. It also prepares you to to conduct critical and media activities. Graduates can work in cultural institutions and artistic agencies involved in the production and promotions of shows, educational institutions providing theatre education, in promotion and advertising agencies, in theatres and in traditional and electronic media.

Media Communication. Students of this specialization learn how to understand the issues of culturally oriented media studies. They study information and communication theory and take part in workshops on new media and various aspects of communication. The specialization provides tools for professional analysis of media language and communication codes, and builds visual and new media awareness. Students participate in classes on the interpretation of audiovisual messages, analysis of the role of words and gestures in the processes of information exchange, analysis of communication behaviour in the media, communication principles, software studies, interfaces in culture, multimedia in art and science, literature on the Web, new media art, media discourses, public relations and image communication, media transgression and intercultural communication.

Graduate: Graduates of the specialization are prepared to work in electronic media, interactive, advertising and artistic agencies as well as to work in social media, media and PR departments, to organize mass events, media education and promotion of media activities.

New Media Journalism. The aim of the specialization is to synchronously approach to literary and journalistic phenomena in their close connection to electronic media, aesthetics and cultural communication. Students participate in classes in the field of contemporary and recent literature, new literary genres and forms, directly related to the Internet and media (fiction, hyperfication, hypertext). Thanks to practically oriented workshops and laboratories, the students acquire practical and workshop skills in the field of new media journalism, art criticism and book promotion.

Graduate: Graduates are prepared to work in both traditional and new media institutions related to literary life, internet portals, editorial offices of electronic media, publishing houses and advertising agencies, as well as in cultural institutions dealing with the organization of literary and media education.

Visual Aesthetics: Space – Experience – Design. The specialization focuses on the understanding the art of imaging, design, architecture, urban planning and music in the context of electronic media, as well as mixed media (the interpenetration of electronic and traditional media). The student participates in classes in the field of widely understood aesthetics, recognizes various aspects of design – from applied art, through fashion, graphics and typography, to design activities in the media. The specialization also provides tools for the analysis of new media artistic practices and Internet art as well as activities in the field of shaping the architecture and space of the city with the use of appropriate software. Students participate in the development of plans for specific places, are prepared to develop adaptation projects in urban space, including architectural monuments and historic urban complexes. During the workshop classes, they learn how to use new technologies in design.

Graduate: Graduates are prepared to work in cultural institutions, local government and state administration units, scientific and research institutes and research and development centres as well as in insittutions providing consultancy.

Visual Cultures: Photography, Film, Media. The specialization focuses on the culturally oriented media studies. Students acquire historical and theoretical foundations of knowledge about past and contemporary cultures of image media, participate in theoretical and practical classes in the field of analysis and interpretation of media messages, cyberculture, archiving and distribution of audiovisual messages, media practices, media in the participation culture, selected issues of imagology and design, contemporary audiovisual culture, media convergence, film aesthetics, comic books, animation and video games, media technology. Students can also takes part in new media workshops.

Graduate: Graduates of the specialization are prepared to work in electronic media and creative industries, to create projects and cultural offers for cultural institutions and non-governmental organizations, especially in the field of organizing media shows and media education, as well as media criticism.

Career prospects:

Media culture graduates have the knowledge, skills and competences that enable them to work in media and in creative industry, as well as in cultural or administrative institutions that require awareness of the functioning of media and new technologies and a general cultural knowledge. They may be hired in interactive and advertising agencies, electronic media, art agencies, non-governmental organizations, media cooperation departments, PR and marketing agencies, cultural institutions, companies and institutions dealing with the organization of mass events, social media departments in companies and culture departments of public administration. Graduates may also undertake their own activity in the field of media consulting and cultural animation or in the field of diagnosing the sources of cultural problems. They are also prepared to supervise projects related to the protection of cultural heritage and to undertake independent initiatives in the field of cultural animation.

Others, important information for candidates:

Students of media cultures have the opportunity to broaden their interests within the framework of dynamically operating scientific clubs. In addition to standard forms of activity, such as: organization of workshops and meetings, participation in symposia and scientific conferences, publishing their own works, students have the opportunity to participate in domestic and foreign field research. Participation in the clubs gives you the opportunity to meet interesting people of culture, participate in interesting scientific trips and gain experience in the field of cultural animation.

Admissions criteria

Candidate has the necessary qualifications and competencies to continue education at 2nd cycle studies in this degree programme, confirmed with a degree diploma.

The candidates with a degree diploma of 1st cycle studies, 2nd cycle studies, or long-cycle studies, particularly in the degree programmes in humanities and social sciences, may apply for admission.

Admission criterion: final grade on the diploma, based on which the ranking list of candidates is created; in the case of candidates who achieved the same final grade and are in a group exceeding the limit of places, the average study grade is decisive.

(Note: A specific major within the degree programme will be launched if it is chosen by at least 10 individuals).
