Description

Characteristics of the degree programme and the majors

The second-cycle studies in Mathematics are aimed at educating the graduate who a has comprehensive and in-depth mathematical knowledge, which allows them to continue education at doctoral studies or to practise the profession of a mathematician at various workplaces using mathematical tools. In particular, the graduate of Mathematics:

  • has an in-depth knowledge of mathematics and its applications;
  • has the ability to construct mathematical reasoning and test the truth of mathematical hypotheses;
  • can present advanced mathematical content in speech and writing;
  • is able to build, develop and use complex mathematical models necessary for applications;
  • uses advanced IT tools in solving theoretical and practical mathematical problems;
  • has the ability to independently expand and deepen mathematical knowledge in the field of current research results;
  • is prepared to continue education in doctoral schools

Career prospects (profile of the graduate):

The graduate of Mathematical Methods in Computer Science has a wide mathematical and IT preparation that allows them to work in an IT position, especially in those areas where mathematical tools and methods play an important role. The graduate has the ability to create, optimize and study the computational complexity of algorithms solving specific practical issues, the ability to construct and implement software, the ability to handle packages supporting engineering work and statistical data processing, knowledge needed to design, operate and administer databases. Due to in-depth mathematical education and broad IT skills, the graduate is able to cooperate at the interdisciplinary level with all those who use mathematics and computer science in their activities, as well as to self-educate and deepen knowledge on their own in the rapidly changing reality.

In addition to extended and in-depth mathematical preparation, the graduate of Mathematics for Finance and Economics has knowledge in the field of applications of mathematics in solving practical and theoretical problems in finance and economics, such as control and optimization of economic activity, processing and statistical analysis of data, mathematical modelling of economic and financial phenomena, preparation of forecasts and analyses of economic activity, financial evaluation of investment projects, and use of mathematical methods on the capital and insurance markets. These skills allow the graduate to work in the financial and insurance sectors, in commerce or in industry.

The graduate of the teaching major - Teacher Training Programme has a thorough mathematical knowledge needed to teach mathematics in all types of schools. The graduate is a teacher extensively prepared for the comprehensive implementation of teaching and educational tasks, who in the teaching process is able to use pedagogical and psychological knowledge, as well as modern multimedia tools. Good subject-related  preparation and the ability to use literature and IT technology will allow the graduate to adapt knowledge and skills to the constantly changing teaching conditions. This major is aimed at graduates of the teaching major of Mathematics of the 1st cycle studies.

Other additional information for candidates

The major Teacher Training Programme is the second stage in education preparing for the profession of a teacher. After completing this major, the graduate can teach the subject of mathematics in all types of schools.

 

Admissions criteria

Admission of candidates will be based on Bachelor’s or Master’s degree diploma grades in a degree programme in the field of natural sciences or engineering and technology.

Admission to studies is decided by means of the place on the ranking list, created on the basis of the candidate’s result (WK), calculated in line with the below formula. If the admission limit is not achieved, all candidates with a result (WK) higher than 0 will be admitted.

Method of calculating points (candidate’s result):

WK = 2 x M + S

where:

WK — candidate’s result,

M — diploma grade in a 1st cycle degree programme in the field of mathematics (M = 0 when the candidate did not complete 1st cycle studies in mathematics),

T — diploma grade in computer science in the field of natural sciences, other than mathematics, or in a degree programme in the field of engineering and technology (S=0 when the candidate did not complete studies in the field of natural sciences or engineering and technology).

If candidates have the same result (WK), the diploma exam grade will be taken into account.
