Characteristics of the programme and the majors:
Full-time second-cycle studies in the programme of Biophysics last 4 semesters (2 years) and finish with the completion of a master’s thesis and obtaining a master’s degree in biophysics. Recruitment for the selected major takes place, but at the end of the first semester students have the opportunity to change the major to one of the three in the degree programme (if it is started). The first semester of studies is common to all majors.
Biophysics is a programme of interdisciplinary nature. During their studies, students deepen their knowledge and skills first within the framework of the so-called common subjects, including molecular biophysics, higher mathematics, mathematical foundations of computer modelling and computer modelling laboratory conducted throughout the entire period of study. They gain knowledge of human anatomy, as well as of the impact of electrical and magnetic phenomena, including natural and artificial sources of radiation, on living organisms. They have the opportunity to listen to lectures on the most modern materials used in biology and medicine, including nanomaterials.
All lectures are combined with laboratory classes (1/3 hours of the lecture and 2/3 of hours of practical classes in the laboratory), which reflects the experimental nature of the studies. In addition, as part of the specialist laboratory, students get the opportunity to work on unique measuring equipment in research laboratories. From the second semester, next to the so-called joint modules, students have classes related to the selected major. The study programme also includes a specialist English language course and a lecture on the philosophy of nature.
The graduates will be able to work in medical, ophthalmological, optometric and pharmaceutical institutions, scientific institutes, enterprises and companies related to health and environmental protection. They will be prepared to independently develop their skills and continue education at the third-cycle studies (doctoral studies).
Major: Molecular Biophysics
The main task of teaching at the second-cycle studies with a major of molecular biophysics is to educate specialists equipped with in-depth knowledge in the field of biophysics and physics, as well as mathematics and computer modelling who will be prepared to work in economic fields related to biotechnology, medicine, medical physics, physics, chemistry and environmental protection. This will be achieved through in-depth and substantive education in the areas of the above-mentioned scientific disciplines, but also through the development of the ability to use the acquired knowledge in practice, independent obtaining of knowledge and integrating it with other fields of knowledge.
Major: Medicinal Biophysics
The main goal of teaching in the major of medicinal biophysics is to educate specialists equipped with in-depth knowledge of physics, chemistry and biophysics as well as mathematics and computer modelling who are prepared to work in the fields of economy related to biotechnology, pharmacy, medical physics, physics, chemistry and environmental protection. During the classes, students will gain knowledge of pharmacology and pharmacognosy, technologies for obtaining drugs and biologically active substances, their effects on living organisms, as well as knowledge related to physical methods of their characteristics. In biological laboratories, they will be able to conduct research on the impact of drugs on cells (in vitro studies), including pathological impact. Developing the ability to use the acquired knowledge in practice, deepening such knowledge independently and integrating it with other fields of knowledge are important elements of education.
The main aim of education at the second-cycle studies in Biophysics in optometry is a broad education of optometrists who will be prepared to practise their profession being equipped with the necessary knowledge in the fields of ophthalmology, optometry, dispensing optics, as well as physics and biophysics. During their studies, students acquire the skills to carry out procedures aimed at determining the dominant eye, measuring pupillary distance, pupillary reaction to light, spatial vision, colour vision, eye movements or field of vision. They will acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to carry out static and dynamic skiascopy, as well as acquire the skills of refraction examination with the help of a foropter and dedicated tests. Students will learn how to use cross cylinders during the selection of astigmatism correction. They will also learn the procedures for examining the components of accommodation, the study of phoria, vergence ranges and binocular functions.
Classes are conducted in modern laboratory settings which include the laboratories of optometry, contactology, binocular and VT vision, dispensing optics, geometric and physical optics or visual aids for the visually impaired. In addition, in order to be familiarized with modern ophthalmic equipment, there will be some opportunity to participate in classes at the department of ophthalmology at the hospital.

Profile of the graduate of Molecular Biophysics
The graduate will have an in-depth knowledge in the fields of biophysics, physics, chemistry and mathematics as well as computer methods used in these fields of knowledge. Specialized lectures and laboratories will result in obtaining comprehensive knowledge of physical and chemical processes taking place at the molecular level, in cells and biological systems. Having access to unique and very modern research equipment, students will be able to observe the phenomena occurring in living organisms. Due to the acquired specialist knowledge, students will acquire the ability to understand and accurately describe physical phenomena, especially in relation to the applications of physics in biology, medical and related sciences. Students will be able to use modern measuring equipment and learn techniques for modelling physical and biological processes. During their studies, students will learn professional English at the B2+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe.
All acquired skills, knowledge and experience will make the graduate an attractive and sought-after employee.
Profile of the graduate of Medicinal Biophysics
The graduate will have an in-depth knowledge in the field of biophysics, chemistry, including drug chemistry and mathematics and molecular physics. Specialized lectures and laboratories will provide students with sufficient knowledge on physical and biological processes occurring in biological systems and caused by active substances. Students will also learn about the role that some substances play in diagnostic processes and therapies. During their studies, students will learn professional English at the B2+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe.
An important advantage of education will be the ability to model drugs and their expected properties as well as to characterise their effect on biomolecules. The acquired knowledge, practical skills in terms of using modern research equipment and preparation for self-education will make the graduate of the major a particularly sought-after employee in pharmaceutical companies.
Profile of the graduate of Optometry
The main aim of education at the second-cycle studies in Biophysics in optometry is the education of optometrists prepared to practise as optometrists, who will be equipped with the necessary knowledge in the fields of ophthalmology, optometry and dispensing optics as well as physics and biophysics. Specialized lectures and laboratories dedicated to the degree programme of biophysics and to the major of optometry will provide graduates with comprehensive expertise essential for practising the profession of optometrist. Students will also learn about physics and chemistry of molecular biological processes occurring in cells and tissues. Students will have the necessary knowledge and basic programming skills, which allow them to model biochemical processes occurring in biological systems. Due to this knowledge, they will have the ability to understand and accurately describe physical phenomena, especially in the area of applications in related medical sciences, and will also be able to use modern measuring equipment, particularly the one which is applicable in ophthalmological examination.
The offer of the labour market for graduates of biophysics is very wide. There is little competition since only three universities in Poland offer education in the field of biophysics. Graduates will be able to work in medical and pharmaceutical institutions, scientific institutes, enterprises and companies related to health and environmental protection. Graduates of optometry will have the opportunity to work in optical companies and shops and in ophthalmology departments.
The aim is to prepare students in the fields of the above-mentioned scientific disciplines and to allow them to acquire the ability to use the obtained knowledge in professional practice, to independently deepen knowledge and integrate it with other fields of knowledge.
Other additional information:
Studies take place in a modern facility, i.e. the Silesian Centre for Education and Interdisciplinary Research (15 minutes by bus from the centre of Katowice) equipped with over 20 biophysics laboratories, 10 physics laboratories, three chemistry laboratories and one biochemistry laboratory and computer labs. Some biology classes take place at the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection of the University of Silesia, which is related to the fact that studies are of interdisciplinary nature.
Optometry classes take place in modern laboratories dedicated to the major (laboratories of geometric and physical optics, eye examination, contactology, processing of spectacle lenses). Students will have the opportunity to complete internships in hospitals and scientific institutions with a biophysical profile.
The candidates who completed 1st cycle studies, 2nd cycle studies or long-cycle studies in the following degree programmes: biology, biophysics, physics, medical physics, technical physics and biomedical engineering, may apply for admission.
The admission criterion is the Bachelor’s, Master’s or Engineer’s degree diploma grade.
In the case when the number of candidates exceeds the limit of places, admission is decided by means of the ranking list, created on the basis of the grade from the degree diploma.
A study candidate is obliged to submit a relevant medical certificate confirming the lack of medical contraindications to take up studies in this degree programme.
