Description

Degree programme characteristics

The 2nd cycle studies in the degree programme of Chemistry last 2 years and are completed with obtaining the Master’s degree. The studies are designed to enable students to deepen their knowledge in the field of chemistry, as well as to develop their own interests as part of major classes.

The proposed curriculum allows students to acquire expanded knowledge and skills through a conscious choice of teaching paths in terms of their individual interests. Students have the opportunity to choose the major module – one of seven proposed and closely related to the research topics carried out at the Institute of Chemistry:

  • Chemical analytics,
  • Biomedical chemistry,
  • Forensic chemistry,
  • Physicochemistry of condensed phases
  • Modern materials for innovative technologies
  • Synthesis and physicochemistry of organic and inorganic compounds,
  • Theoretical methods in chemistry.

Additional information about major modules can be found at:  https://us.edu.pl/wydzial/wnst/studia/student/kierunki/specjalizacje/

Considering the current trends and demand of the labour market, the curriculum is particularly focused on shaping practical skills in students that allow effective work in the profession of a chemist and solve problems related to their profession.

A characteristic feature of education in the degree programme of chemistry is the innovativeness of the education model, which consists in preparing students to consciously create their own future by:

  • activities enabling students to develop their interests (implementation of individual research projects as part of student-teacher cooperation, support for the activities of the scientific circle),
  • activities raising awareness of the importance of choosing one’s own student and professional career (through a conscious selection of scientific supervisors, monographic and major lectures, etc.),
  • organization of classes as part of teaching projects financed from the European Social Fund. These classes include foreign study visits, internships at employers, certified training, problem laboratories in various fields of chemistry; trainings shaping universal professional and social competences,
  • participation in ERASMUS+ and MOST programmes enabling the acquisition of knowledge and experience in other scientific and research units in Poland and abroad.

As part of the Master’s seminar and other classes, attention is paid to issues related to job search, employers’ expectations, the role and importance of scientific research, the need to protect intellectual property and commercialization of research results.

Classes in the degree programme of chemistry are conducted by academics with high qualifications and recognized scientific achievements. The high quality of education in the field of chemistry is evidenced by the accreditation of the Polish Accreditation Committee (PAC).

As the graduate of the 2nd cycle studies in the degree programme of Chemistry, you will:

  • have a well-established knowledge of basic fields of chemistry obtained during the 1st cycle studies,
  • have a broad and interdisciplinary view of chemical issues, which you will gain through advanced courses and practical classes offered in major,
  • conduct appropriate laboratory activities and analyses, as well as operate laboratory equipment and measuring apparatus,
  • be prepared to manage specialized software and computer databases,
  • know English at the B2+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe and will have the ability to use specialized English related to the degree programme,
  • use professional literature available in Polish and English,
  • be able to work individually and in a team to achieve specific results,
  • be able to conduct research, as well as participate in research projects in the field of various fields of chemistry,
  • be able to present the results of your own research in written and/or oral form,
  • be aware of the role of developing your own interests and constantly deepening knowledge,
  • will be able to use the acquired knowledge in professional work and life in compliance with legal and ethical principles,
  • be aware of the challenges of the 21st century related to sustainable development,
  • be prepared to undertake the third-cycle (doctoral) studies.

Our GRADUATES work in:

  • highly specialized industrial physicochemical and biochemical laboratories,
  • professions of analysts, synthetics and technologists in many branches of the chemical industry and related industries,
  • laboratories involved in conducting forensic and environmental research,
  • pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies,
  • institutions involved in ecology, monitoring and environmental protection,
  • companies involved in the distribution of chemical reagents and specialized laboratory equipment,
  • The graduates continue their education at doctoral studies and set up their own companies.

Admissions criteria

The candidates with a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Engineer’s degree diploma in natural sciences or engineering and technology may apply for admission.

Admission is based on the analysis of documents, i.e. diploma supplement, or extract from the student record book or other documents, to confirm the candidate’s qualifications to take up these studies.

In the case when the number of candidates exceeds the limit of places, admission is decided by means of the ranking list, created on the basis of the degree diploma grade.

In the case of candidates with the same final diploma grade, the following admission criteria are further applied respectively: average study grade, and then diploma thesis grade.

A study candidate is obliged to submit a relevant medical certificate confirming the lack of medical contraindications to take up studies in this degree programme.
