Education profile: General academic

ECTS guidebook

  • Medical diagnostics and imaging
  • Dosimetry and oncology therapy

Characteristics of the programme:

Full-time second-cycle studies in medical physics last 3 semesters, and finish with the defence of the master's thesis and obtaining the master’s degree in medical physics. After the first semester of studies, students undergo compulsory internships (60 hours). An important task of education in medical physics is connected with preparing physicists to work in interdisciplinary teams (which are composed of doctors, biologists, chemists and technicians) and to act as experts in the fields of radiotherapy planning, quality management systems in the domains related to medical physics, safety quality management systems, technical quality of imaging procedures, and preparation and operation of non-standard procedures. Classes are conducted by employees of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and the Institute of Physics of the University of Silesia, as well as the Medical University of Silesia, and the Maria Skłodowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology, Branch in Gliwice.

The learning outcomes of medical physics differ from the profile of the graduate of physics and technical physics with the major of medical physics in terms of a broader preparation in the field of biological, medical and legal sciences with simultaneous deepening of physical and mathematical knowledge in terms of biomedical sciences.

The graduate is prepared to continue the education process at the doctoral school (third-cycle studies).

Career prospects (profile of the graduate):

The graduate has an extensive knowledge in the field of medical physics and the ability to use and develop the methods of modern physics for biomedical research and applications. They are very well prepared to act as experts in the field of treatment planning in radiotherapy, quality management systems (QA) in the domains related to radiological protection and broadly understood medical physics. They are prepared to work in specialized health care facilities, control and measurement laboratories in research and implementation centres and to conduct research in scientific institutions. In addition, the graduate has competence to work in institutions and organizations involved in counselling and dissemination of knowledge in the fields of medical physics, teaching the profession and in institutions working for environmental protection.

Second-cycle studies in medical physics are aimed at preparing graduates to work as medical physicists at the best possible level after obtaining the title of a specialist in the field of medical physics (Regulation of the Minister of Health of 20th July 2011 on the qualifications required from employees at particular types of jobs in medical entities that are not entrepreneurs).

Other additional information about the qualifications:

The graduates are prepared in terms of theoretical knowledge so that after obtaining relevant professional experience in health care facilities, they can apply for the professional title of a specialist of a medical physicist and then senior assistant in medical physics.

Admissions criteria

The candidates who completed 1st cycle studies, 2nd cycle studies or long-cycle studies in the following degree programmes: physics, medical physics, technical physics, biophysics and biomedical engineering, may apply for admission.

The admission criterion is the Bachelor’s, Master’s or Engineer’s degree diploma grade.

In the case when the number of candidates exceeds the limit of places, admission is decided by means of the ranking list, created on the basis of the grade from the degree diploma.

A study candidate is obliged to submit a relevant medical certificate confirming the lack of medical contraindications to take up studies in this degree programme.
