Characteristics of the degree programme:

The 2nd cycle studies in History allow to deepen and supplement the knowledge of the events from the past of Poland and the world and to improve the skills of using it in practice. During the 2nd cycle studies, the individualisation of the course of studies is introduced to an even greater extent than in the case of the 1st cycle studies: a large number of classes takes into account different “epoch” interests of the participants, allowing for expansion of their passions, development of skills and shaping independent intellectual and research activity, as well as preparation for proper perception of cultural heritage and active participation in its creation.

Career prospects (graduate profile):

Studying history with a 2nd cycle degree allows you to broaden your knowledge (especially of selected epochs) and cross-curricular skills needed to undertake various professional tasks and responsibilities. Additionally, the graduates of particular majors receive professional preparation:

1) Administrative-Municipal Specialisation – apart from acquiring general knowledge and historical skills, the students broaden their knowledge of issues including social and economic problems, practical aspects of official activities, legal and macroeconomic issues. The graduates of the major are prepared to take up employment in various levels of state and local administration, etc.

2) Archival and Documentation Management – apart from the acquisition of general knowledge and historical skills, the students broaden their knowledge in the field of issues covering a wide spectrum of archival science and documentation management. The graduates of this major are prepared to work in state and company archives as well as in any institution that requires document management.

3) Teaching Specialisation – apart from acquiring general knowledge and skills in history, the students broaden and supplements their knowledge in the field of issues that prepare them to work as a teacher of history and social studies (in accordance with the standards of teacher education specified in the relevant regulations of the Minister of National Education).

Other, additional information about the qualifications: The history degree programme includes a Teaching Specialisation preparing for the teaching profession. The University of Silesia provides the best graduates of the 2nd cycle studies with the opportunity to continue their studies in the Doctoral School.

Admissions criteria

Candidate has the necessary qualifications and competencies to continue education at 2nd cycle studies in this degree programme, confirmed with a degree diploma.

Admission process includes competitive admission based on Master’s degree or long-cycle diploma grades — the diploma grade is taken into account.
Admission is decided by means of the ranking list, created on the basis of the final result of the studies, in line with the following rules:

  • completing studies in history — result multiplied x 3;
  • completing studies in a different degree programme in the field of humanities — result multiplied x 2;
  • completing studies in the field of other sciences — result multiplied x 1.
