Characteristics of the degree programme and the majors

The degree programme known as Biomedical Engineering (BME) is part of the engineering and technology sciences. It is focused on bioinformatics, health informatics, medical imaging and processing, telemedicine, physiological signal processing, biomechanics, biomaterials, system analysis, 3D modelling and biomedical optics.

The 2nd cycle studies in the degree programme of BME are a significant contribution to the achievement of strategic goal No. 2 (Innovative education and modern teaching and scientific offer at the world level) and No. 3 (Active cooperation of the University with the environment), which are included in the document Development Strategy of the University of Silesia in Katowice for the years 2012-2020. According to this document, the priority task of the University in the field of modern education is to establish new, interdisciplinary curricula of inter-faculty and interdisciplinary studies and the studies conducted jointly with the socio-economic environment of the University. The task of the University is to provide students with comprehensive education and not to neglect knowledge and specialist skills typical of individual degree programmes. Compliance with the superior strategy automatically fulfils the strategy of the Faculty, and particularly the goal of improving the degree programmes conducted at the Faculty. The creation of the 2nd cycle studies is included in this activity as a continuation of education from the 1st cycle studies.

Major: Modelling and Simulation of Biomedical Systems

Making virtual models as part of generally understood biomedical engineering is currently one of the basic activities aimed at obtaining, for example, matched implants, prostheses or other objects cooperating with the human body. Graduates are able to identify biomedical engineering problems and solve them (through modelling, design, technology and construction development) by means of computer techniques.

Major: Imaging and Modelling of Materials for Biomedical Applications

The major known as Imaging and modelling of biomaterials allows solving many problems concerning them in a non-invasive manner. The graduate is able to make the selection of adequate materials for implants, knows their applications and the impact of the living organism environment on the implant’s behaviour and biological assimilation, knows the mechanisms of tissue reaction to the implant, knows the biophysical, biochemical and biomechanical requirements for implants, knows the mechanisms of degradation of biomaterials and technologies for applying surface layers to implants and solves construction problems related to implants.

Major: Modelling and Simulation of Biomedical Systems

  • work in computer companies in designing and implementing biomedical systems,
  • work in design, construction and technological units operating in the medical and peri-medical industry,
  • work in solving research problems, creating innovations and implementing new solutions.

Major: Imaging and Modelling of Materials for Biomedical Applications

  • work in research institutions and research and development centres,
  • work in institutions involved in counselling and dissemination of knowledge in the field of biomedical engineering, biomaterial technology and computer-aided technology.

Other additional information for candidates

The studies are intended for people with a professional title of at least Engineer’s/Bachelor’s degree.

Admissions criteria

The candidates with a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Engineer’s degree diploma in natural sciences or engineering and technology may apply for admission to 2nd cycle studies.

Admission is based on the analysis of documents, i.e. diploma supplement, or extract from the student record book or other documents, to confirm the candidate’s qualifications to take up these studies.

In the case when the number of candidates exceeds the limit of places, admission is decided by means of the ranking list, created on the basis of the degree diploma grade.

In the case of candidates with the same final diploma grade, the following admission criteria (ranking) are further applied respectively: average study grade, and then diploma thesis grade.
