Overview of the programme and majors:
Two-year studies (second-cycle studies) in the programme of pedagogy finish with a master’s degree. The curriculum of pedagogy allows the graduates to be equipped with the extended pedagogy-related knowledge supplemented with the elements of philosophical, psychological and sociological education. It allows them to shape the extended skills of pedagogical thinking, analyse the educational reality, formulate, classify and solve pedagogical problems and educational situations independently. It gives them the expanded theoretical preparation for further self-education and professional improvement. The student learns, experiences, realizes in practice and in relations with the social environment the extended contents of general pedagogy and major-related modules.
Education preparing for the profession of a teacher of the subject known as “Family Life Education” is realised as part of full-time and part-time second-cycle studies in pedagogy (Care-Educational Pedagogy and Family Life Education). The studies are the second-cycle stage of education which prepares students for the teaching profession of the subject taught in the same programme. The curriculum determines the learning outcomes which include knowledge and skills corresponding to the requirements of the core curriculum of the subject taught at the secondary school. These studies allow students to obtain full qualifications to perform the profession of a teacher. The subject matter and teaching-related preparation for providing classes (methodology of teaching the subject of “Family Life Education” and internships) enables students to acquire knowledge necessary for the implementation of the curriculum content and educational and preventive skills that will allow them to adapt their activities to the needs and abilities of students and support their development in building identity. The curriculum includes learning about social norms and standards, shaping pro-family attitudes, discussing moral problems, problems in marriage and family life, predicting the consequences of one’s own behaviour, teaching love, responsibility and respect for human life, as well as encouraging self-education and self-development. Moreover, studies in this major prepare students to organize and undertake care, education, assistance to children and youth growing up in different forms of fostering and family such as foster families, family orphanages, family emergency and institutional forms, including educational care facilities. Studies also improve skills in the field of diagnosing, monitoring problems of inefficient families and taking appropriate actions towards the child and at work with families (counselling, support, cooperation, socio-cultural activation of the elderly).
Second-cycle studies in Pedagogy: Corrective Pedagogy and Care-Educational Pedagogy prepare students to perform the profession of a special education teacher in the field of corrective pedagogy and a pedagogue specialized in care and educational pedagogy. Their aim is to educate pedagogues equipped with interdisciplinary knowledge in the field of pedagogy, psychology, sociology, social prophylaxis, legal basis of care activities, special education, corrective pedagogy and family support. Students learn theoretical and practical basics of social support organization (including children and students with special needs), activation of the local community, work in culturally diverse environment, work with people at risk of social exclusion, with individuals and families in crisis, people with addictions and disabilities. During the internship and workshops, students will acquire skills in the methodology of care and educational work, corrective work, as well as interpersonal and educational skills necessary for the job of a school pedagogue and a special education teacher with the major in corrective pedagogy, counselling and therapy of children, adolescents, adults and the elderly.
Corrective Pedagogy and Care-Educational Pedagogy is an educational offer for creative, sensitive individuals with a natural inclination to be involved in the following:
- diagnosing the child, developing therapeutic programmes, and preparing to teach corrective-compensating classes and various forms of therapy of children with specific learning and social functioning difficulties;
- pedagogical therapy to improve the development of pupils, compensate for deficiencies in their knowledge and skills;
- conducting specialist classes as part of statutory psychological and pedagogical assistance organized at schools and institutions;
- care and assistance to children and youth growing up in foster families and care and educational institutions;
- diagnosing problems of inefficient families and taking appropriate actions towards a child and their family (counselling, support, cooperation);
- support and socio-cultural activation of adults, including those with disabilities.
Second-cycle studies in Pedagogy: Social Rehabilitation and Intercultural Education prepare students to the profession of a special education teacher in terms of social rehabilitation and a social rehabilitation specialist and a form teacher. The aim of the studies is to equip graduates with social competences, interdisciplinary knowledge and skills necessary to work with children, adolescents and adults who are socially maladjusted, who engage in risky behaviour or come into conflict with the law in diverse environments. The major is distinguished by the introduction of intercultural education to the curriculum, which allows students to broaden competences in working in the environment that is diverse due to nationality, culture, religion or other important identity traits in the contemporary world in relation to culture and space. The graduate acquires a detailed and expanded modern knowledge of the place and significance of social rehabilitation in the system of sciences, its subject-related and methodological specificity in Poland and worldwide, as well as its relations with other sciences. After reaching the assumed learning outcomes, the graduates have a broadened knowledge on work organization, structures, forms of work in educational institutions (they know and understand the idea of inclusive and integrative education), social rehabilitation, diagnostic and care and educational institutions, as well as therapeutic and support-related institutions, supporting individuals in need at different ages. During studies, the students deepen their knowledge and skills concerning probation and penitentiary systems in Poland and worldwide. The graduates are equipped with the skills of social diagnosis and prevention, an in-depth diagnosis of selected problems of human functioning in emotional and social contexts. They know the basics of security in theory and practice and are able to relate them to individual dimensions (global, national, regional, institutional). As part of studies, the students acquire skills and competences in the methodology of social rehabilitation with particular emphasis on the methods for creative social rehabilitation. They are competent to work with families in crisis. The graduates are able to integrate knowledge and use acquired skills and competences, following the rules of professional ethics. They can also design preventive, educational, anti-discriminatory and integrative actions and activities in diversified educational environments. The graduates are able to conduct scientific research based on the knowledge of the methodology of pedagogy-related research, using the research techniques acquired in class. They are characterized by the ability to analyse the sources and assess their subject matter and scientific values. The graduates are also characterized by a creative, searching attitude, and they are ready to solve educational and social problems in a culturally diverse environment and to cooperate with institutions.
The graduates with the major of Care-Educational Pedagogy and Family Life Education acquire preparation to practise the profession of a teacher. They are fully qualified to practise the profession of a teacher of the subject known as “Family Life Education” in primary and secondary schools if they have a diploma of graduation of the first- and second-cycle studies in the programme, the curriculum of which defines the learning outcomes, including knowledge and skills corresponding to all requirements of the core curriculum of the subject. Moreover, the graduates can join the existing projects or create their own projects and educational, preventive and leisure time management programmes for children, teenagers and the elderly. The graduates are prepared to work as a school pedagogue, a child caretaker, an educator (form teacher) in (school, community, care and educational) clubhouses, in educational and child care centres and institutions (nursery, orphanage, family orphanage, family emergency, children’s care centre) as a family assistant, and a foster care coordinator.
The graduates of Corrective Pedagogy and Care-Educational Pedagogy are able to join existing projects or create their own therapeutic programmes both in care and educational institutions, as well as in open environment. They are also prepared to work as pedagogues, special education teachers and form teachers in care and educational institutions, facilities and administrative units. The preparation in the domain of corrective pedagogy gives the possibility to be employed as a therapist, a teacher therapist, special education teacher in educational institutions, specialist educational facilities, both at school and outside of school, psychological and pedagogical counselling centres, specialist counselling centres, specialist institutions of family support and foster care, e.g. specialist clubhouses that conduct therapeutic work. Due to the combination of the major in care educational pedagogy and corrective pedagogy, students are prepared to work in the institutions of the educational department, such as schools, psychological and pedagogical counselling centres, institutions providing care and education for students during their education outside their permanent residence (dormitories, boarding schools, clubhouses), teacher training institutions, etc, educational and care facilities related to out-of-school education (the palaces of youth, youth culture centres, school youth hostels) as teachers and form teachers.
The graduates of the Social Rehabilitation and Intercultural Education acquire qualifications to perform the profession of a special education teacher in the field of social rehabilitation and competences to work as a social rehabilitation specialist and a form teacher in educational institutions, care and educational facilities and other institutions, including probation office teams, the prison service, counselling centres, therapeutic centres, and crisis intervention centres. In addition, the graduates acquire competences to work in the culturally diverse environment with children, adolescents and adults (as well as with refugees, immigrants and re-emigrants).
Others, important information for candidates:
Studies in Care-Educational Pedagogy and Family Life Education are conducted in accordance with guidelines defined in Appendix 1 to the Regulation of the Minister of Science and Higher Education from 25 July 2019 on education standards for pre-service teachers (Journal of Laws from 2 August 2019, item 1450).
Studies in Corrective Pedagogy and Care-Educational Pedagogy and Social Rehabilitation and Intercultural Education are eligible to work as special needs teachers (of a given major) in accordance with new standards defined by the Regulation of Ministry of National Education from 25 July 2019, Appendix 3 (Education standards for special education teachers, speech therapy teachers and early development support teachers).
Whether the courses will commence is dependent upon the number of candidates for a given major. In the event that courses shall not commence, candidates will have an opportunity to select an available course in a related major.
IMPORTANT: The second-cycle studies in pedagogy are the second stage of preparation for the profession of a teacher or the profession of a special education teacher in the selected major.
Only candidates who have completed the first-cycle studies in pedagogy in the following majors can be admitted to the programme of pedagogy:
1) FAMILY LIFE EDUCATION, which is the first stage of preparation for the profession of a teacher, considering the requirements of the core curriculum of the subject, i.e. family life education;
2) CORRECTIVE PEDAGOGY (PEDAGOGICAL THERAPY) or SOCIAL REHABILITATION, which are the first stage of preparation for a profession of a special education teacher in the indicated areas.
NOTE: If the candidate has completed another teaching major at the first-cycle studies or has completed studies in pedagogy other than the one of the indicated areas, obtaining the full qualifications to teach a subject or qualifications to be a special education teacher at the second-cycle studies in pedagogy requires the realization of the paid curricular differences.
Admission is based on the assessment of required documents submitted by the candidate (upon prior registration in Online Application System).
In the case when the number of candidates exceeds the limit of places, admission is decided by means of the ranking list, created on the basis of the arithmetical mean of all grades in 1st cycle studies, in line with the following rules:
*Only the candidates who completed 1st cycle studies in Pedagogy with the following majors may apply for admission to Pedagogy degree programme:
1) Family Life Education, which is the first stage of preparation to practise as a subject teacher, taking into consideration the requirements of core curriculum in the following course: family life education;
2) Corrective Pedagogy (Pedagogical Therapy) or Resocialisation Pedagogy, which are the first stage of preparation for the profession of special education teacher within the specific scopes.
In the case when the candidate completes a different teacher training programme in 1st cycle studies or completes pedagogy studies in a different scope, obtaining full teaching qualifications (i.e. qualifications to practise as a teacher of a vocational subject or as a special education teacher) at 2nd cycle studies in pedagogy requires making up for curriculum differences against payment, within the scope appropriately adjusted to the given scope - resocialisation pedagogy. 1) family life education or 2) corrective pedagogy (pedagogical therapy) or 3) resocialisation pedagogy.
