Description

Overview of the programme and majors:

The degree programme is addressed to candidates with broad interests in the field of creating and processing music and sound. The studies prepare specialists in composition and arrangement, methods of digital sound recording, digital processing, surround sound, voice recording and processing, MIDI equipment and software, as well as audio post production in virtual reality, e.g. in games and educational programmes. The offer of this degree programme contains the possibility of choosing an individual education path – one of them concerns sound creation for computer games, and the other one concerns composition of music for audio-visual arts.

Indispensable additions to the degree programme are theoretical courses, which allow passing reliable knowledge from the fields of history and theory of music, classical music, harmony, aesthetics, rules of the functioning of the market of the music industry understood in a general sense, as well as relationships between music and other media, and modules broadening the general knowledge of humanities and social sciences, as well as foreign languages.

Career prospects:

Graduates from the degree programme Music in Multimedia are prepared for independent artistic activity in the fields of composition and arrangement, using digital methods of sound recording, digital processing, surround sound, voice recording and processing, MIDI equipment and software, as well as audio post production in virtual reality, e.g. in games and educational programmes. The studies also prepare graduates for work as authors of music illustrations (authors of the music layer) for audio-visual productions, especially audio-visual projects on the internet and television, as well as short film forms.

Others, important information for candidates:

An integral part of the degree programme is the internship, whose aims involve:

  • developing basic practical professional skills concerning the production of various forms of music in the multimedia, as well as performance skills connected with it;
  • practical application and verification of the theoretical knowledge and skills acquired during classes;
  • introducing students to the organisation, functioning, and processes of production in companies and institutions from the music industry (recording studios, advertising agencies, radio, television, cultural institutions, companies from the market of games and interactive entertainment).

Admissions criteria

Admission process is based on the entrance exam testing the candidate’s artistic skills and on the interview.

For the candidates who plan to choose the educational path related to composing music for audio-visual arts:

Ear training:

  • Oral test: reading sheet music aloud, recognising intervals and chords.

Grade: 1-10 points

Instrument playing:

  • Playing any piece of music on a selected instrument (performance time – approximately 10 minutes).

Interview:

The candidate may present their previous attempts and works related to the selected degree programme and should display their knowledge in one of the below fields:

  • Polish film music, Polish film music composers in history and at present;
  • foreign film music, foreign film composers in history and at present;
  • description of artistic biography of a selected Polish music composer, who is the author of film music to at least three full-length feature movies;
  • film director — film music composer, examples and characteristics of domestic and foreign director — composer author duos (e.g. Krzysztof Kieślowski – Zbigniew Preisner, Roman Polański – Krzysztof Komeda, Steven Spielberg – John Williams, Krzysztof Zanussi – Wojciech Kilar, Wojciech Smarzowski – Mikołaj Trzaska, Andrzej Jakimowski – Tomasz Gąssowski, others);
  • general analysis of musical elements of the soundtrack to a selected full-length feature movie;
  • music composer’s workshop in history and at present, computer and digital techniques as a modern tool for implementing the musical concept.

Grade: from 1 to 30 points; positive grade: from 16 points.

The candidate’s final result is a sum of points obtained at particular stages of the admission process. To achieve a positive final result, the candidate must obtain at least 16 points.

For the candidates who plan to choose the educational path related to creating sound in computer games:

Musical aptitude test

  • recognising intervals and triads, reading sheet music, carrying out rhythmical realisation.

Grade: 1-10 points

Playing any musical instrument or presentation of individually prepared sound or audio-visual works.

In the first case, the candidate presents at least one chosen piece of music (duration: at least 3 minutes). If the candidate plays a different instrument than piano/organ, they must arrive at the exam with the instrument (or optionally with an accompanist).

In the second case, the candidate presents two works performed by themselves, different in character, delivered on CD-Audio, DVD or in the form of files on USB carrier, in a standard, popular format (e.g.: WAV, .AIFF, MP3 or MP4, WMV, AVI, 3GP, 3G2, M4V, MOV, etc.). These may include recordings, computer arrangements, edited sound or audio-visual works, etc. Candidate orally presents the assumptions of these works and technical details behind their execution.

Grade: 1-10 points

Interview – examples of topics:

  • different categories of computer games in the context of their sound;
  • comparison of capacities in respect of sound expression of acoustic musical instruments and synthesisers;
  • role of sound in building action in computer games;
  • music in movies vs. music in games; contemporary media market with reference to culture and music.

Grade: 1-10 points

Grade: from 1 to 30 points; positive grade: from 16 points.

The candidate’s final result is a sum of points obtained at particular stages of the admission process. To achieve a positive final result, the candidate must obtain at least 16 points.

Admission to the above-mentioned degree programme is decided by the place on the ranking list based on the final result of the admission process. Passing the Matura exam is the formal requirement.
