Description

During the admission process in the IRK system, candidates will be asked to choose one of five additional languages: (Chinese/Japanese/Korean/Arabic/German)

Characteristics of the programme:

The graduates of the major have knowledge about specialised variants of English and rules of interpretation and translation of specialist texts. They know tools and skills of a translator. They know how to use parallel texts, corpora and other verification sources for a translation. They apply appropriate translation techniques and strategies, especially when dealing with lack of equivalence. The graduates are able to determine the type of translated text and its target recipient and apply appropriate register. They know the editorial requirements and basis of proof-reading the target text.

Career prospects (graduate profile):

- translator profession (also in specialist and artistic translation), work in translation agencies;

- work in mass media (radio, TV, press, the Internet);

- work in tourism and service sector, in the International Relations Departments;

- work in editorial offices and cultural institutions, especially those requiring advanced knowledge of English.

The graduates of the English-Polish Translation and Interpreting have general humanistic education, as well as specialist education in linguistics. They have a comprehensive knowledge and skills in practical English. They are fluent in English and are able to translate specialist and artistic texts. Philology studies prepare the graduates to become translators and allow them to apply for a sworn translator licence. Due to the habits of thinking and acting developed during the studies, the graduates of this major can communicate in various professional environments and flexibly adapt to the labour market demands in professions requiring fluency in English. The graduates are prepared to use their knowledge and language skills in professional situations involving work in translation agencies, mass media (radio, TV, press, the Internet), tourism and service sector, the International Relations Departments, and cultural institutions.

Admissions criteria

The following candidates may apply for admission:

  • candidates who obtained the Bachelor’s degree diploma in English Studies: Translation and Interpreting, or English Studies: Translation Programme with a second language (e.g. Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, German, Hindi etc.), or other language studies with a second language (e.g. Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, German, Hindi etc.);
  • candidates who completed 1st cycle studies, 2nd cycle studies, or long-cycle studies, including a mandatory course block in the theory and practice of translation, have documented knowledge of English and a second language (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, German or Korean) at B1 level according to CEFR.

In the case of English language, one of the following documents is required:

  • British Council IELTS certificate (with a minimum total score of 6.0), 
  • TOEFL iBT certificate (with a minimum total score of 79),
  • TOEFL BPT certificate (with a minimum total score of 570),
  • Cambridge CAE certificate (at the minimum C level),
  • Cambridge CPE certificate (at the minimum C level),
  • PTE Academic certificate (with a minimum total score of 52),
  • Cambridge FCE certificate (at the minimum A level),
  • Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language certificate (at the minimum C level),
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma (minimum grade in the exam in English selected as Language A or B - 5).

For foreign candidates:

The knowledge of Polish at C1 level according to CEFR (advanced) is required.

Admission process:

Admission is competitive and based on diploma grades.

An additional admission criterion, in the situation when many candidates obtained the same grade on the diploma, and the limit of places does not allow for admission of all candidates, will be the average study grade.

Candidates qualified for admission to studies, together with the required documents, shall submit a certificate confirming the grade average from studies, issued by the authorities of the university where the candidate completed their studies.

Launching particular student groups as part of the above-mentioned major at English Studies depends on the required number of applications depending on the relevant provisions.
